A French-Palestinian member of the European Parliament revealed that her entry into Canada was denied shortly before her planned participation in events in Montreal. Rima Hassan expressed online that she was obstructed from traveling to Canada, labeling it an act of censorship.
The left-wing party, La France Insoumise, stated that Hassan’s electronic travel authorization was initially accepted but later revoked by Canadian authorities on Friday. Allegedly, Canadian officials claimed she did not disclose a previous visa rejection, denial of entry, or any criminal history. The party believes the denial was influenced by Hassan’s past denial of entry into Israel, along with objections tied to her vocal support for Palestine and criticisms of Israel.
Hassan’s party mentioned that she was set to speak at a conference addressing pro-Palestinian suppression and the rise of the far right. Despite the entry denial, Hassan stated she would still deliver her speeches remotely, emphasizing the importance of parliamentary action and freedom of expression.
Various community organizations in Montreal, including Alternatives, Independent Jewish Voices, and Quebec Doctors Against Genocide, had invited Hassan to Canada. She virtually participated in a news conference organized by these groups but deferred questions until her conference addresses the following day.
NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice expressed suspicion over the abrupt denial, suggesting it was politically motivated due to Hassan’s strong stances on Palestinian issues. Concerns were raised by Boulerice and Québec Solidaire legislator Andrés Fontecilla, calling for transparency and highlighting potential censorship implications.
Advocacy groups gathered to demand explanations from the federal government regarding Hassan’s entry restriction. The CBC reported that Canada Border Services Agency declined to disclose further details, citing privacy concerns. B’nai Brith and CIJA supported the decision to bar Hassan from entering Canada, emphasizing their opposition to individuals justifying terrorism or denying Jewish history.
