About half of households in Ottawa that have curbside waste collection will experience changes to their pickup schedules by the end of March. These modifications are in line with a new collection contract set to commence on Monday, March 30.
While the frequency of pickups will remain consistent, with organic and yard waste being collected weekly, recyclables on an alternating weekly basis, and garbage every two weeks, the schedule adjustments may lead to variances in the collection of different waste categories. For instance, some homes may have paper recycling collected for two consecutive weeks, while plastics and garbage may accumulate for three weeks before being picked up.
To aid in the transition, the city will permit residents to place up to six items at the curb on garbage pickup day from March 30 to April 24, which is double the usual limit. The updated schedules can be accessed online, with additional notices set to be sent out by late February. The city has also committed to distributing at least one more waste pickup calendar for 2026-27 before shifting focus to digital listings.
Under the new contract terms, leaf and yard waste must be kept separate from green bin recycling. Furthermore, several adjustments have been made to Ottawa’s recycling program, including an expanded list of acceptable items, following the implementation of a new provincewide recycling system on January 1.
