Nearly twenty-five years following the tragic death of rap icon Jam Master Jay from Run-DMC, a man confessed in court on Monday to being involved in a murder that had puzzled investigators for decades.
Jay Bryant admitted guilt to a federal murder charge, acknowledging that he assisted others in gaining access to a recording studio to ambush the DJ, born Jason Mizell. Bryant revealed, “I was aware that a gun would be used to shoot Jason Mizell. I knew my actions were unlawful and a crime.”
This confession provides some resolution but also complicates the intricate case. Bryant did not disclose the identities of the other individuals involved. In 2024, a jury convicted Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Washington, but Jordan was later acquitted by a judge. Washington has also contested his conviction.
Bryant, aged 52, is anticipated to receive a sentence ranging from 15 to 20 years in prison for the murder along with unrelated drug and firearm charges to which he previously pleaded guilty. A sentencing date has not been determined.
Following his court appearance, Bryant gestured a thumbs-up to someone in the audience before departing, with both the individual and Bryant’s lawyers declining to comment. Prosecutors refrained from immediate statements.
Jam Master Jay, a pivotal member of Run-DMC, was tragically shot in his Queens studio at the age of 37. Jordan and Washington, who were arrested in 2020, were allegedly resentful due to a failed cocaine transaction that Mizell had orchestrated.
Despite Run-DMC’s anti-drug stance, it was revealed that the DJ had dabbled in the cocaine trade in his later years to manage financial obligations. Prosecutors and trial witnesses claimed that Jordan shot Mizell while Washington blocked the door during the attack.
Nearly three years subsequent to their arrests, Bryant was implicated in the murder case, with his DNA discovered on a hat at the crime scene. Prosecutors alleged that Bryant facilitated the assailants’ entry into the studio. Bryant confessed that he was connected to individuals involved in a drug deal with Mizell and assisted in facilitating the fatal ambush.
While Bryant’s uncle claimed Bryant admitted to shooting Mizell in self-defense, no witnesses testified to Bryant’s presence in the studio. Prosecutors asserted that Bryant’s role was to facilitate access to the building, enabling the assailants to enter without alerting Mizell.
Although neither Jordan’s nor Washington’s DNA was found on the hat, it was suggested that one of them inadvertently left it behind, with Bryant potentially handling it beforehand.
Members of Run-DMC, including Jam Master Jay, DMC, and DJ Run, were known for their influential contributions to rap music in the 1980s, achieving mainstream success and accolades. Their impact on the genre was profound, leading to their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
