“Decades-Long Mystery Solved: Missing Woman Identified After 47 Years”

Authorities have confirmed the identity of a woman found dead in Quebec in 1979 as Pamela Harvey, who had been reported missing from Sudbury, Ontario, in 1978. Dental records and DNA testing were crucial in the positive identification.

Pamela Harvey, aged 23, was reported missing by her family on Christmas Day in 1978. Detective Sergeant Bob Weston from the Greater Sudbury Police’s forensic identification unit revealed that Harvey was romantically involved with a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang, coinciding with a rival gang member’s shooting in November 1978, around the time of her disappearance.

In March 1979, the body of an unidentified murdered woman was discovered in St-Eustache, Quebec. Harvey’s disappearance remained a missing person case for over 40 years in Sudbury, where investigators diligently pursued leads.

Forensic evidence from the unidentified victim in Quebec was meticulously preserved, including X-rays and dental records. In 2025, a forensic dentist in Montreal linked the cases by identifying Harvey’s protruding upper teeth, a distinctive feature noted in her records.

Following the dentist’s lead, Harvey’s family provided DNA samples in 2018, which, after advanced forensic testing by the Quebec coroner’s office, confirmed the match. Weston praised the attention to detail by the original investigators in 1978, emphasizing the significance of small clues in solving cold cases.

Weston personally informed Harvey’s family of the positive identification, marking a significant moment in his career. The family, while requesting privacy, expressed relief and gratitude for finally having closure after 47 years of uncertainty.

Authorities disclosed that the suspected perpetrator of Harvey’s murder had died in 1979. The Quebec provincial police declined to provide additional details about the case or the deceased suspect.
