P.E.I. Premier Rob Lantz held a press conference on Monday morning to address the unexpected news of Gilles Arsenault’s removal from the cabinet over the weekend. Expressing his disappointment, Lantz stated that Arsenault had been relieved of his duties as the minister of economic development, trade, and artificial intelligence, as well as the minister responsible for Acadian and francophone affairs.
The decision to remove Arsenault came after a legal opinion was issued, revealing that a $100,000 donation from a private developer had allegedly been directed to a community group in Arsenault’s district of Evangeline-Miscouche, prompting concerns regarding his judgment. Lantz emphasized the necessity of maintaining not only a conflict-free environment for elected officials but also the appearance of such integrity. As a result, Arsenault has been suspended from the Progressive Conservative caucus pending an investigation by the conflict of interest commissioner.
The premier outlined a timeline of events leading up to Arsenault’s removal, detailing interactions between the developer and Arsenault regarding proposed changes to a construction project. The situation escalated when it was discovered that the developer had encroached upon unapproved wetlands, leading to a stop-work order issued by the Land and Environment Department.
In response to criticism from opposition parties, the Liberals and the Green Party called for further investigations and transparency surrounding the issue. The Greens raised concerns about the government’s adherence to proper procedures and suggested involving the auditor general in an impartial inquiry. Amidst the controversy, a cabinet reshuffle took place, with new appointments made to key ministerial positions.
