“Artemis II Crew Launches Historic Moon Mission”

A group of four brave astronauts, including Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency and NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, have embarked on a thrilling 10-day journey to the moon. The launch took place on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. ET from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, marking NASA’s return to crewed lunar missions after a hiatus of 54 years.

The crew, known as Artemis II, will spend a day in Earth’s orbit before igniting the main engine to propel them towards the moon, covering a distance of approximately 405,000 kilometers. Although they will not land on the moon during this mission, NASA aims to pave the way for future expeditions that will reach the lunar surface.

Throughout the mission, the astronauts are conducting tests on the systems of the Orion spacecraft. Key objectives of the Artemis II mission include demonstrating Orion’s manoeuvrability and testing the interim cryogenic propulsion stage (ICPS) which will elevate Orion to a high-Earth orbit before separating from the capsule for handling tests.

As the journey progresses, the crew will carry out experiments onboard, including deploying CubeSats and conducting a CPR demonstration in zero gravity. They will also test communication systems through NASA’s Deep Space Network and capture images of the moon’s far side during a close approach.

The astronauts will face challenges such as a temporary loss of signal when on the far side of the moon and will focus on testing radiation shielding, piloting skills, and other crucial tasks leading up to their return to Earth on the tenth day. The mission aims to gather valuable data for future lunar missions, including Artemis IV, which is projected to bring astronauts back to the moon by 2028.
