The Toronto International Film Festival revealed 66 titles for this year’s gala and special presentations programs. These platforms are known for attracting red-carpet attention and generating momentum for award season contenders. The lineup features a blend of global prestige and Canadian flair, with world premieres showcasing a variety of genres and star-studded casts.
Among the premieres at the 51st edition of the festival are David and Nathan Zellner’s sci-fi comedy “Alpha Gang,” starring Cate Blanchett and Chris Pine; Chris Rock’s dramedy “Misty Green,” featuring Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya, and Rosalind Eleazar; Anton Corbijn’s drama “A Talent for Murder,” with Helen Mirren in the lead role; and Lauren Miller Rogen’s rom-com “Babies,” starring Seth Rogen and Anna Kendrick.
One highly anticipated premiere is “I Play Rocky,” directed by Peter Farrelly, known for “Green Book.” The film explores the challenges faced during the production of the iconic 1976 film “Rocky,” with newcomer Anthony Ippolito portraying a young Sylvester Stallone. The festival’s closing night gala will feature Yan Lanouette Turgeon’s biographical sports drama “Villeneuve: The Rise of a Legend,” focusing on Canadian racing legend Gilles Villeneuve.
Also making its Canadian premiere is Andrew Haigh’s “A Long Winter,” a film set in the mountains as a family prepares for the harsh season ahead. Canadian director Mina Shum’s “Whatcha Want” will have its world premiere, offering a unique blend of “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Flashdance,” with Isabella Wei and Ming-Na Wen in key roles.
“In Alaska,” a Dutch-Canadian co-production, will debut at the festival, centered on a 17-year-old Alaskan boy on the run after a critical event involving an oil pipeline. Noteworthy documentaries include “Man in Motion: The Rick Hansen Story” and “Run Terry Run,” shedding light on iconic Canadian figures.
