“Brantford Dental Clinic Shutdown Prompts Hepatitis and HIV Testing Alert”

After the closure of a dental clinic in Brantford, Ontario, due to sterilization issues, former patients and a receptionist have come forward following a public health unit’s warning to undergo testing for hepatitis and HIV. The Grand Erie Public Health department shut down Dr. George Chan Dentistry on St. Paul Ave. on Nov. 3, following a complaint filed by Lyn Portelli, a former receptionist at the clinic, on Oct. 29, 2025, leading to an investigation uncovering 15 lapses in instrument sterilization.

In response to the lapses found by the investigation, Dr. Aviv Ouanounou from the University of Toronto’s dentistry faculty noted the significance of the number of infractions. While temporary shutdowns are uncommon, permanent closure is rare. The public health unit’s full report from March 18 is available on their website, indicating the seriousness of the situation.

Patients who visited the clinic within the last four years received letters in mid-March advising them to pursue testing based on the IPAC report. Heather Harrington, a former patient, expressed her anxiety over the situation, especially concerning her children’s exposure to potential infections. The patient recall was initiated in March, prompting individuals like Harrington to seek testing for peace of mind.

The health unit’s letter, signed by Jason Malenfant, outlined the risk of exposure to improperly sterilized dental instruments, highlighting potential infections like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. Although the overall risk is deemed low, the recommendation for testing was made to ensure patient safety.

Portelli, the former receptionist, revealed her discovery of the sterilization issues and promptly reported them to the health authorities, leading to the clinic’s closure. Concerned patients, including Justin Currie and Andrew Dukeshire, have also highlighted their worries and the need for testing following potential exposure.

The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) is investigating the matter involving Dr. Chan’s clinic, emphasizing the importance of adhering to infection prevention and control protocols. The health unit and regulatory bodies are committed to ensuring compliance with public health standards to prevent similar incidents.

Overall, the incident underscores the critical role of proper infection control practices in healthcare settings. Patients are advised to be vigilant, observe hygiene practices, and report any concerns to regulatory bodies or public health units to maintain trust and safety in medical care.
