Johnson, just days away from his wedding and movie shoot, expressed ease in portraying Bourdain’s story, despite the chef’s iconic status following his tragic death in 2018.
Initially not planning to make a film about Bourdain, Johnson’s perspective shifted after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie. Johnson and Sessa connected over shared perspectives on various life issues, prompting Johnson to explore these themes through the film.
The script for “Tony” draws from Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential,” condensing stories from his youth into a narrative set during one summer in Provincetown, Mass. Johnson and Sessa, both relatively unfamiliar with Bourdain’s work, aimed to capture the essence of Bourdain’s early struggles and aspirations without the burden of recreating his later persona.
By focusing on Bourdain’s formative years, Johnson sidestepped the pressure of depicting the revered figure many fans idolize. The film delves into Bourdain’s complex relationships and self-perception as he navigates the challenges of young adulthood, making his story relatable to audiences.
“Tony” is set to premiere in Canadian theaters on August 14, offering a fresh perspective on the legendary chef’s life.
