“Dongfeng Debuts Affordable EVs in Montreal”

Dongfeng, a prominent Chinese automaker, has introduced its electric vehicle lineup in Montreal’s Old Port, marking its entry into the Canadian market. The company showcased two electric vehicle models to the media, currently in the certification process to meet Canadian safety and regulatory standards.

The showcased models include the compact EV, BOX 01, and the electric SUV, Vigo. Both models are anticipated to be priced below $35,000, as stated by Julie Mazorra Fernández, the director of North World Industry, the official Canadian distributor for Dongfeng.

Emphasizing affordability, Mazorra Fernández expressed the company’s commitment to offering reasonably priced vehicles to Canadian consumers. The goal is to make these models available in the Canadian market by next year.

In a move to boost interest, tariffs on Chinese EVs were reduced in 2024 by the Canadian government, allowing for more competitive pricing. Prime Minister Mark Carney negotiated a tariff reduction to 6.1%, enabling the annual import of 49,000 Chinese EVs with specific quotas for affordable models under $35,000.

Recent data from Global Affairs Canada indicates a surge in Chinese EV imports following the tariff adjustment, with notable brands like Tesla and Geely making their debut in the Canadian market. The introduction of the Lotus Eletre, a luxury electric vehicle, garnered attention during a media event in Old Montreal.

Chinese automakers are strategically targeting Quebec as the initial market for their EVs due to the province’s favorable conditions for electric vehicles, such as consumer awareness and affordable electricity. The subsequent expansion into British Columbia and Ontario is planned to capitalize on growing electric vehicle markets.

Despite modest sales projections in Canada, Chinese automakers view the country as a stepping stone towards entering the lucrative U.S. market. Industry experts believe that Canada’s similarities to the U.S. market in consumer preferences and regulations make it an ideal testing ground for Chinese vehicles.

Acknowledging concerns raised by domestic automakers about competition and cybersecurity risks, industry experts anticipate that the influx of lower-priced Chinese vehicles will drive North American automakers to enhance their competitiveness and lower prices in response to market demands. Consumers eagerly await the availability of Dongfeng’s EV models upon completion of the certification process.
