Former U.S. Department of Transportation inspector general Mary Schiavo expressed concern over the lack of communication among the involved parties during the incident. Air Canada Express Flight 8646, operated by Jazz Aviation, was en route from Montreal to New York with 72 passengers and four crew members when it collided with a fire truck on the runway at LaGuardia airport in Queens, New York.
The collision severely damaged the jet’s nose, leaving debris and cables hanging from the cockpit. Disturbing images from the crash scene showed the overturned fire truck amidst the wreckage. Tragically, the pilot and copilot lost their lives, while a flight attendant was thrown through the air but miraculously survived.
Approximately 40 passengers and crew members were transported to local hospitals, some with severe injuries, though most have since been discharged. The incident unfolded as the flight departed Montreal later than scheduled, encountering unexpected challenges upon arrival at LaGuardia airport.
