“Unusual Four-Legged Emu Hatchling Surprises B.C. Farm”

An unusual four-legged emu recently hatched at a farm in Nanaimo, B.C., surprising the owners and veterinarians who are puzzled by the malformation. Celina Knuff, co-owner of Back to Nature Acres Farm, expressed her amazement at this rare occurrence on their 21-acre blueberry farm, which is home to various animals including emus, chickens, pigs, sheep, and cattle.

Knuff mentioned that they have successfully hatched about 11 chicks this year without any issues until now, making this emu chick’s condition unprecedented in their experience. The chick was born under incubation and emerged on its own. While currently alert and cheerful, it has not yet stood up or cleared its bowels, indicating potential internal complications that could affect its survival.

Despite facing challenges, Knuff described the chick as lively. She has reached out to a veterinarian in Washington state for potential assistance, including the possibility of removing the extra legs if necessary. Dr. Tyler Stitt from Winchelsea Veterinary Services in Nanaimo remarked that in all his years of practice, he has never encountered such a unique case.

The veterinarian explained that there could be various causes for the additional legs, with temperature fluctuations during incubation being a likely factor. Other potential reasons include exposure to environmental toxins, inbreeding, or absorption of a twin during development. Stitt emphasized the seriousness of the chick’s inability to defecate, stating that its survival may be at risk if this issue persists.

Looking ahead, Knuff plans to transfer the chick to a rescue organization capable of providing specialized care, as managing it herself amid the upcoming blueberry harvest and their relocation to Nova Scotia would be impractical. By entrusting the emu to a rescue, Knuff hopes to give it the best chance of thriving under professional care.
