A heat wave sweeping across Europe has led to the tragic deaths of at least 18 individuals in France, including two young children who were left in a hot car. The scorching temperatures have broken records in various cities, with forecasters in the UK expecting June records to be surpassed.
In France, the city of Bordeaux experienced a temperature of 41.9 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record set in August. Similarly, in Poitiers, the temperature reached 41.2 degrees Celsius, breaking a high set back in 1947. Even in San Sebastián, Spain, which is known for its cooler climate, temperatures soared to 40 degrees Celsius, well above the city’s historical average for this time of year.
The extreme weather conditions have been attributed to an Omega block weather pattern, characterized by a bulge of hot air from North Africa. Experts warn that climate change is intensifying heatwaves and storms, leading to higher temperatures and increased rainfall.
In response to the heat wave, authorities in France have cautioned against swimming in unsupervised areas after a spike in drowning incidents. The impact of the heat wave has also been felt in Italy, where red heat alerts have been issued for 12 cities.
Wildlife has not been spared from the effects of the heat wave, with birds such as swifts, swallows, sparrows, and starlings facing challenges due to the abnormally high temperatures. Animal shelters have reported an increase in the number of distressed animals seeking refuge from the scorching heat.
