Residents in a Whitehorse neighborhood troubled by the noise from diesel generators may find relief through new power plants and silencers, according to the Yukon Energy Corporation. A petition with nearly 200 signatures, presented by NDP, calls for noise emission regulations and mitigation measures for diesel generators used in Whitehorse, Faro, Mayo, and Dawson City. The petition urges the Yukon Legislative Assembly to set sound emission standards and requests Yukon Energy to address noise issues from existing and new generators.
During cold winter months, diesel generators are crucial for power supply, albeit causing significant noise disturbances, as noted by the Environment Minister. Responding to the petition, Minister Wade Istchenko highlighted Yukon Energy’s commitment to conduct a design study on noise mitigation strategies and implement them through a procurement process.
Yukon Energy acknowledges the concerns and has engaged engineering firms to identify noise sources and reduce sound levels. Plans are in place to limit nighttime noise and establish a complaint management system. Furthermore, a proposal for custom-made silencers for older generators aims to reduce noise impact. The upcoming Whitehorse power centers project will relocate newer generators away from residential areas, reducing reliance on older units.
MLA Justin Ziegler of the NDP expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the power plant project in resolving noise issues. He emphasized the importance of producing electricity with acceptable noise levels to safeguard the well-being of residents in Riverdale and other areas affected by generator noise pollution. Yukon Energy aims to enhance noise mitigation measures by 2026, ensuring a quieter environment for residents.
