“ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation Leads Lake Stewardship Research”

The ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation is commencing a series of scientific and economic investigations on Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake as part of an extensive water stewardship initiative that has triggered discussions concerning recreational boating in the region.

Chief Donald Sam of ʔAkisq̓nuk emphasized the significance of stewardship to the Ktunaxa people, highlighting the necessity of credible data in decision-making processes. With an investment of $200,000, the First Nation will conduct mapping of the East Kootenay lakes, analyze shoreline conditions, sediment movements, and evaluate the economic impact of recreational activities on the lakes.

Concerns have been raised by some locals regarding potential restrictions that could adversely affect the local economy amidst these stewardship deliberations. Chief Sam clarified that the aim is not to hinder economic progress but to identify recreational activities that align with the long-term preservation of the lakes.

The research initiatives coincide with escalating scrutiny of wake-surfing boats, which are known to disturb sediment, damage shorelines, and contribute to environmental degradation in smaller lakes. Due to the shallow nature of Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake, they are particularly vulnerable to wake disturbances and shoreline erosion.

Mayor Al Miller of the District of Invermere expressed support for a science-based approach to tackle these issues, emphasizing the importance of considering both economic and environmental factors in decision-making processes. He stressed the need to gather all relevant data to make informed decisions that prioritize the well-being of the lakes.

Chief Sam assured that no immediate restrictions are being contemplated for this summer, with the focus being on information sharing and community engagement. The ultimate goal of the stewardship planning process is to develop a comprehensive strategy that harmonizes environmental conservation with economic prosperity for the lakes’ sustainable future.
