Apple announced price increases for its iPad and MacBook products due to rising costs of memory and storage chips attributed to AI industry expansion. The company stated that it had been absorbing the cost hikes but had to adjust prices to reflect the current market conditions.
The price adjustments were immediately reflected on Apple’s website, with the MacBook Neo now starting at $949, a $150 increase, and the Education model at $819, up from $679. Other Apple products like the HomePod and Apple TV also saw price hikes, while the iPhone prices remained unaffected.
The surge in component costs is driven by AI companies buying up critical components like RAM, leaving limited supply for consumer electronics. Major memory manufacturers such as Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix are prioritizing orders from AI chipmakers, leading to supply shortages and price spikes across consumer products.
The impact of the RAM shortage is felt across the tech industry, affecting gaming consoles like Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. Companies like Microsoft and Valve have raised prices on their products to cover increased component costs. Microsoft announced a price increase of $100 to $150 per console, while Valve’s Steam Machine saw a significant price jump due to the RAM shortage.
The global shortage of memory and storage components is expected to persist through 2027, according to Micron. Manufacturers are ramping up production to address the increased demand, with hopes that the supply chain will stabilize once new production facilities come online.
