“CPL Gears Up for World Cup Spotlight & Season Opener”

The upcoming FIFA World Cup in Canada is set to attract global attention, with significant changes planned for the Canadian Premier League this year. Officials in the eight-team national league are confident in its readiness for the spotlight.

Costa Smyrniotis, the CPL executive vice-president, expressed optimism about the league and its players, emphasizing the potential for new stars like Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies to emerge from the CPL. The league’s eighth season will commence with Forge FC facing Atletico Ottawa in Hamilton on Saturday.

Last season, Atletico Ottawa clinched the championship in a thrilling match against Forge FC, marked by a memorable goal by David Rodriguez known as the “icicle kick.” The viral moment captured global attention, showcasing the CPL’s unique and exciting brand of soccer.

Commissioner James Johnson highlighted the league’s commitment to innovation, including the adoption of FIFA’s “daylight” offside rule trial for the 2026 campaign. This rule change aims to enhance the attacking aspect of the game and improve match flow.

The addition of expansion team FC Supra du Quebec will bring fresh excitement to the league, maintaining the total number of teams at eight. With the World Cup hosting games in Vancouver and Toronto, the CPL sees an opportunity to attract new fans and elevate the sport’s profile in Canada.

During the World Cup, CPL clubs will host watch parties, and the league will establish “Canada Soccer House” venues in North Vancouver and Toronto. Smyrniotis emphasized the league’s role in nurturing Canadian talent and contributing to the growth of soccer in the country.

As Canada prepares to host the World Cup, the CPL looks forward to showcasing its quality and contributing to the country’s soccer development on both national and global stages.
