New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s decision to skip the event reflects concerns about the gala’s disconnect from wider societal issues like wealth inequality and affordability.
The absence of Mayor Mamdani underscores a potential shift in the event’s cultural significance as Vogue’s iconic editor Anna Wintour nears retirement. With questions surrounding the gala’s future without Wintour at the helm, the Costume Institute has been prudent in building a financial reserve from gala proceeds to ensure sustainability in uncertain times.
