Meta Faces Backlash Over AI Image Tool on Instagram

Instagram users have been known to enhance their photos with various filters and techniques, so it was not unexpected when Meta, the parent company of Instagram, introduced new generative AI effects to elevate content quality. However, following backlash, Meta has retracted a significant feature of this new tool.

Shortly after its launch, Meta disabled a feature that allowed AI users to tag an Instagram account and have the system generate images using content from that account. Users would need to manually opt out to prevent others from creating photos with their content, if they were even aware of the feature.

In response to the feedback, a Meta spokesperson stated in an email to CBC News that the feature had been removed as it did not meet expectations.

Initially rolled out on Tuesday, Muse Image by Meta offers over 30 new effects for Instagram stories and WhatsApp, with plans to extend its availability to Facebook and Messenger. Described as the “first AI image generation model from Meta Superintelligence Lab,” Muse Image allows users to transform their photos with a single tap. Muse Video is also in development.

Although currently accessible for use in Instagram Stories and WhatsApp in the U.S., Canadians can explore some new features on the Meta AI website directly. Notably, users with public accounts in other countries, including Canada, had Meta AI permissions enabled by default, requiring manual opt-out.

As of the last update, Meta had not disclosed whether the controversial Instagram tagging feature would be reintroduced. The feature had prompted concerns from users and privacy experts, leading to guides on how to opt out.

To disable the Meta AI permissions that allow the use of photos for image generation, users must navigate to the “Sharing and reuse” section in settings on their mobile devices. Users are advised to toggle off permissions related to allowing content reuse on Instagram and with AI features at Meta.

Muse Image, touted as an “intelligent creative partner” by Meta, enables users to apply preset AI-generated effects for various purposes, such as enhancing photos or creating personalized content like birthday cards. The tool also allows users to create their own effects by following prompts.

Despite the potential for fun and creative uses, concerns have been raised regarding the implications of such tools. Ethical Digital’s founder and CEO, Katrina German, highlighted the necessity for opt-out mechanisms and expressed apprehension about the misuse of AI-generated content.

In a digital landscape where user data is already extensively collected, the introduction of Muse Image raises questions about user consent and privacy. Meta’s history of AI model training using data from public posts on Instagram and Facebook underscores the importance of user control and data protection.

While Muse Image is not the only AI image tool available, its introduction reflects a broader trend in the tech industry towards AI-driven creative tools. Concerns about privacy and consent have prompted scrutiny of similar tools and their potential impact on user-generated content.

As the debate on AI-generated content continues, users are encouraged to stay informed about the implications of such tools and take proactive steps to protect their privacy and digital content.
