The Junos organization reports that hosting the 55th Juno Awards in Hamilton resulted in a local economic impact of $17.2 million. The event, which took place in March at TD Coliseum, included various official Juno and Juno-related activities held throughout the month.
Prior to the Juno Awards, Tourism Hamilton anticipated a significant influx of visitors to the city, expecting a $12-million boost in spending at local hotels, music venues, bars, and restaurants. Lisa Abbott, the city’s tourism and culture director, expressed delight in surpassing these projections, attributing the success to Hamilton’s vibrant music scene.
According to Abbott, the economic assessment was conducted by a consultant commissioned by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), the organization responsible for the Junos, Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and music education program, MusiCounts. CARAS announced that this year’s Junos had the highest recorded economic impact for a hosting city and contributed to an estimated $23.1 million in total economic activity across Ontario.
Describing the economic impact as a “ripple effect,” Abbott highlighted how attendees of Juno events supported local businesses by dining out, refueling their vehicles, and shopping in the area. The Junos attracted over 16,250 attendees and more than 3,000 music industry delegates, artists, and media representatives.
Abbott emphasized that the Juno festivities extended beyond downtown Hamilton, with collaborative efforts involving Business Improvement Areas and the Six Nations tourism team to plan engaging programs. Hamilton’s current branding campaign focuses on promoting the city as a hub of music and culture.
Looking ahead to upcoming major sporting events and the launch of two new hockey teams in the fall, Abbott affirmed the city’s commitment to maintaining its identity as the “city of music,” a characteristic deeply ingrained in Hamilton’s essence.
