Several churches in St. John’s are facing financial challenges due to soaring oil prices, resulting in unexpectedly high heating bills that are straining their budgets. Gower Street United Church, for instance, is grappling with a 40% increase in their oil expenses this year, leading to significant budget cuts. Board chair Jonathan Stevenson expressed concern over the limited options available, mentioning the possibility of renting out the sanctuary to generate additional income.
Meanwhile, St. Teresa’s Parish is also feeling the financial burden, with oil bills surpassing last year’s expenses by $7,000. Pastor Ciro Perez highlighted the difficulty of heating the large church space efficiently, emphasizing the need for substantial amounts of oil. Although the church aims to transition to electric heating, the hefty $600,000 cost remains a significant obstacle.
In contrast, the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is taking a proactive approach by switching to electric heating, a million-dollar project scheduled for this summer. The Very Reverend Roger Whalen emphasized the necessity of this transition, citing the unreliability of oil prices. Despite missing out on potential government grants for oil rebate programs, the cathedral is determined to alleviate the financial strain caused by volatile oil bills.
Whalen noted that the cathedral’s oil expenses have fluctuated dramatically, sometimes increasing by $30,000 annually. By switching to a lower-grade oil and planning to embrace electric heating, the cathedral hopes to stabilize its energy costs. In contrast, Gower Street United Church is bracing for a challenging year ahead, with Stevenson acknowledging the unpredictability of oil prices and its impact on the church’s financial planning.
