Anisabeth Kaiya Danis Waswa-Rae, known as Kaiya, stood out as the sole female goalie on her hockey team in Thunder Bay, Ontario, after relocating from North Caribou Lake First Nation. Despite her young age of 18, Kaiya’s decision to register as an organ donor before her passing on March 26 has earned her posthumous recognition as a hero.
Her funeral is scheduled to take place in North Caribou Lake, where she hails from. Kaiya’s selfless act of organ donation has resulted in her liver, kidneys, heart, pancreas, lungs, and vessels being donated. These organs have been successfully transplanted into recipients, with the vessels reserved for future use.
Kaiya’s mother, Stacey Rae, revealed that Kaiya tragically ended her life due to struggles with mental health and bullying. Despite her challenges, Kaiya was known for her infectious smile that could light up any room.
In a touching tribute to her altruism, a special hero walk was organized at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre before the organ retrieval procedure. Family and friends, clad in hockey jerseys, lined the hallway to honor Kaiya’s final act of giving.
As a member of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, Kaiya is believed to be the youngest donor from the community. Her family hopes that Kaiya’s noble gesture will inspire others to consider organ donation, a cause that was close to her heart.
