Brush fires have been reported on Newfoundland’s Bay de Verde Peninsula, prompting the Heart’s Content Volunteer Fire Department to impose a fire ban in their community as well as New Perlican, even though it is not yet wildfire season. Heart’s Content fire chief, Kyle Piercey, expressed the desire to prevent a repeat of last year’s devastating wildfire season, which saw multiple uncontrollable wildfires causing evacuations and the destruction of numerous structures in the region. Piercey emphasized the rapid spread of fires, stating that it only takes a small spark for a situation to escalate out of control.
Over the weekend, Bay Roberts Fire Rescue dealt with a brush fire in Port de Grave that affected a significant area and came dangerously close to homes. The fire reportedly originated from a barrel fire that spiraled out of control. Several other fire departments in the Conception Bay area have also responded to multiple brush fires this month, some of which were ignited by barrel fires.
Piercey attributed the decision to implement the fire ban to the reports of brush fires and near misses in neighboring communities. He highlighted the local weather conditions as a factor in the ban, which prohibits all open pit fires while allowing the use of propane barbecues and fireplaces. The ban will remain in effect until further notice, with Piercey urging those considering burning brush to obtain a permit from the provincial forestry department.
Concerns about the upcoming wildfire season are prevalent among residents, prompting proactive measures to be taken early on to ensure safety. Mayor Glenda Hiscock vividly recalled the fear of a wildfire that reached within 10 kilometers of Heart’s Content, emphasizing the importance of early action to prevent similar incidents. Hiscock praised the dedication of volunteer firefighters who sacrificed their time and safety to protect communities during last year’s wildfires.
Reflecting on the challenges faced, Hiscock emphasized the significance of prioritizing safety this year. She commended the fire department’s proactive approach, underscoring the critical role of preparedness in mitigating wildfire risks.
