“Nunavik Delegation Stuns at Arctic Winter Games Gala with Celestial Showcase”

The Nunavik delegation wowed the audience at the Arctic Winter Games cultural gala by showcasing the constellations of their northern skies. Velesie Adams expressed how these celestial patterns connect various regions and people, highlighting the shared bond among the Inuit community.

Performers from different parts of the circumpolar north gathered in Whitehorse for the gala, sharing their unique stories, languages, songs, and cultures. Among the participants were representatives from the eight competing contingents, as well as a special guest group from Nunatsiavut, the Labrador-Inuit delegation.

Teagan Michelin and Brooklyn Wolfrey-Allen, hailing from Nain and Rigolet, respectively, delivered a heartfelt performance as part of the Labrador-Inuit delegation. Despite the challenges of remote preparation, the duo harmonized their voices for the first time just days before their memorable act.

The Nunavik delegation’s performance included a story revolving around the three hunters constellation. This narrative, as explained by George Johannes, reflects the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Inuit people, emphasizing the importance of preserving and sharing such folklore.

The Heart of Riverdale performers from the Yukon captivated the audience with a dynamic routine blending contemporary and break dancing styles. Their performance, inspired by the essence of Whitehorse and the theme of connection, showcased the strong bonds within their community.

Other highlights of the gala included traditional Inuit music by the Inuksuk Drum Dancers from Nunavut, jigging performances by the Mackenzie River Dancers from the Northwest Territories, and a cultural act by Team Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) exploring themes of identity and spirituality.

Team Sapmi enthralled the crowd with their traditional music form “luohti,” inviting audience participation and creating an engaging atmosphere. Similarly, the Tatitlek dancers from Team Alaska and the performers from Team Alberta North delivered powerful and culturally rich performances, showcasing their heritage and skills with pride.
