“OPP Warns of Spring Ice Dangers After Snowmobilers Rescued”

Ontario Provincial Police issued a caution regarding the risks associated with spring ice conditions following an incident where two snowmobilers plunged into the icy waters of Georgian Bay on Friday evening. Responding to a distress call near Robin’s Point Road in Tay Township, Ontario, law enforcement officials discovered that the snowmobiles had broken through the thinning ice while the riders were on separate machines. Fortunately, both individuals were equipped with survival flotation suits, which aided in their rescue by Tay Township Fire crews. Subsequently, paramedics transported the snowmobilers to a hospital as a preventive measure against cold exposure. The second snowmobile was safely retrieved to the shore. Emphasizing the importance of vigilance, the OPP urged both residents and visitors to exercise caution due to the unpredictable nature of ice conditions, particularly with rising temperatures. Police highlighted that seemingly stable areas of ice could rapidly deteriorate and strongly advised against venturing onto the ice.
