Rare North Pacific Right Whale Spotted Near Malcolm Island

Troy Bright, a long-time whale researcher based on Malcolm Island, had a unique sighting on Sunday. While he has observed whales for decades with Bere Point Research, the whale he encountered was a new find. Bright immediately grabbed his camera to capture the distinctive features of this rare whale, noting its short, black pectoral fins that differentiated it from a humpback whale.

Experts, including Bright and Jared Towers from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), confirmed that the whale spotted was an endangered North Pacific right whale. Towers, who resides in Alert Bay, emphasized the rarity and endangered status of this whale species, highlighting the significance of this sighting.

The juvenile North Pacific right whale, approximately eight meters in length, spotted near Malcolm Island, is a remarkable discovery. This sighting is crucial for the conservation efforts of this critically endangered whale population, which numbers fewer than 50 individuals. Towers expressed optimism about the sighting of a right whale calf, indicating a potential positive sign for the dwindling whale population.

North Pacific right whales are known for their unique characteristics, including “gunshot calls” songs and a lack of dorsal fins. Despite limited sightings, efforts have been made to study and protect these elusive whales. Researchers have detected the presence of these whales off Langara Island using sonobuoys, shedding light on their acoustic behavior.

The recent sighting of a North Pacific right whale in Canadian waters has garnered attention from conservationists and researchers. Kevin Campion, founder of Save the North Pacific Right Whales, emphasized the historical impact of human activities on these whales, urging for conservation efforts to aid in their recovery. The challenges faced by these whales, including prey scarcity and ship strikes, highlight the importance of conservation initiatives and research to protect this endangered species.

The discovery of the North Pacific right whale near Malcolm Island provides valuable insights into these elusive creatures. Researchers are hopeful that further study and protection measures will aid in preserving these remarkable animals and their critical habitats.
